What do you think is the first thing someone tends to think about us as Caribbean people? If you said our accents and the way we speak then you’re thinking like me. How many times have you experienced meeting someone, only for them to do an awful imitation of a Caribbean accent, throwing in commonly used words they learned from reggae, dancehall or soca songs?
They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery so….. I have to admit these experiences have made me realize that there is something very special about the varied ways in which we speak as Caribbean people.
The Caribbean sits at the crossroads of Native Peoples, African resistance, Indian perseverance and European colonization. What’s been birthed out of this is a range of Creole languages, oftentimes with a common thread throughout the region.
In exploring the words we use, their meanings, their origins and the multiple variations across the region, it made me want to share that knowledge. That’s how Caribtionary™ was created! Over on IG, there’s a weekly Caribtionary™ series. We also have Caribtionary™ Collection of greeting cards which is inspired by our spectrum of languages. . Come learn with us!
